About Us

AgeBetter, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) organization whose sponsors are two well-established nonprofit retirement communities in Dane County, Wisconsin: Attic Angel Association and Oakwood Village.

Formerly named Madison Area Continuing Care Consortium, AgeBetter, Inc., began as an LLC in 1998. In 2006, and just a year after launching the Sharing Active Independent Lives – SAIL program, we applied for and were approved as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.

We soon learned about an organization similar to our flagship program, SAIL, named Beacon Hill Village and located in Boston, MA. Today, SAIL is considered the nation’s second oldest “village” among more than 280 other villages that were created since 2006. SAIL is a charter member of the Village to Village Network—a national association of villages and serves as a mentor organization for some of the newly developing villages.

A 2017 strategic planning retreat that included key stakeholders resulted in a new plan for our organization. This plan generated the creation of a full-time Executive Director position dedicated to developing new initiatives in addition to ensuring long-term sustainability of the SAIL program. In 2018, we changed our name to AgeBetter, Inc., to represent the holistic focus of our organization’s plan and future vision.

Between 2019 and 2021, we explored the creation of a senior affordable housing model that would integrate SAIL and it’s programs to support aging in place. AgeBetter was not awarded tax credits that were needed to proceed. In 2022, we prepared to launch a home safety assessment pilot program modeled after the SSM Health SAFE at Home program. We were successful in receiving pilot program grants and completed 40 home safety assessments in 2023 in partnership with Madison College. The success pilot positioned us to launch our newest program, Safe at Home in 2024.

Our programs include:

  • Sharing Active Independent Lives—SAIL
  • Safe at Home

Both of these programs support safe and healthy aging at home. The programs assist older adults in protecting their independence while remaining connected and engaged. We partner with older adults and provide ways for them to take an active role in their health and well-being.
